Department

SABIC is a global leader in diversified chemicals with operations in more than 50 countries and over 35,000 employees worldwide. The Analytical Technology team (>30 FTEs) is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization and provides analytical characterization expertise to support technology programs across Strategic Business Units such as PETCHEM and SPECIALTIES. The chemical characterization laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of modern analytical techniques in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology and microscopy.
As part of the SABIC family of businesses, we attract diverse talents and develop their leadership and technical skills. We are currently looking for a motivated and self-reliant HLO student for a 6-9 months internship in Geleen (The Netherlands) to work on molecular characterization of polyolefins using high-end separation techniques like High Temperature Size Exclusion Chromatography (HT-SEC), Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation (TREF) and preparative Molar Mass Fractionation (pMMF).

Note: This is an internship for a minimum of 6-months. Candidates who are not available at least for 6 months will not be considered. Candidates who are not currently enrolled as students will also not be considered.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities

Characterization of molecular heterogeneity of Polyolefins through multi-dimensional separation techniques

Modern polyolefins are highly complex and exhibit distributions in molecular properties, particularly chemical composition and molar mass, which have a significant influence on polymer end properties. Multi-dimensional separation techniques are necessary to resolve and understand these molecular heterogeneities in detail with preparative fractionation as the initial separation technique. It is expected that the student performs competency building on this preparative fractionation expertise but also support daily operation in the laboratory.

Responsibilities:
• Develop new methods for preparative Molar Mass Fractionation of polyolefins
• Validate robustness and reproducibility of the method
• Perform sample preparation, operation of equipment and data calculation for existing routine methods like HT-SEC, aTREF and pTREF
• Contribute to safety operations in the laboratory
• Collaborate with analytical colleagues to collect input for competency building
• Organize own work and prioritize daily analytical requests.

Requirements

• Analytical chemist, HBO level or equivalent with strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Good general laboratory / chemical handling skills
• Ability to work precisely and avoid cross contamination
• Ability to organize efficiently, prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
• Flexible, creative and self-reliant
• Good verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and in English
• Knowledge of polyolefins is a plus
